Grey hair may occasionally show pigment again, but there is no established treatment that reliably restores colour to age-related grey hair. A change in one hair or a small study should not be taken as a promise for every person. [1, 2]
Why hair loses colour
Follicles make less melanin as hair greys. Ageing and family history contribute; the biology is more complex than a single pigment cell “switch.” [1]
Can a grey strand darken again?
Researchers following individual human hairs observed some greying and reversal patterns that aligned with changes in reported stress. The study analysed 397 hairs from 14 donors. It does not prove that managing stress will restore grey hair broadly or reverse long-standing, age-related greying. [2]
Do scalp products or supplements restore natural pigment?
There is currently no effective medical treatment to recolour grey hair in general. An underlying condition, such as a nutritional deficiency, may warrant assessment and treatment, but that is different from promising reversal for everyone. Hair colour products can change the visible shade; they do not demonstrate restoration of natural pigment production. [1]
When to seek professional advice
Consult a dermatologist or primary care clinician if greying begins unusually early for you or occurs with other concerning symptoms. A clinician can decide whether a health assessment is appropriate. A scalp reaction to a hair dye should be evaluated separately; do not assume that “PPD-free” or “fragrance-free” means reaction-free. [1, 3]
If you choose to colour
